Its Fairtrade Fortnight!

25th Feburary to the 10th March

Fairtrade is so important.  In a world where so much is out of our hands we can control our consumer habits and their knock on effects. I often harp on about the concept of voting with your wallet and fairtrade is a key example of how you can choose and act positively in your daily life.

This year the campaign is focusing on chocolate. I, like many, am a big chocolate fan but that doesn't necessarily mean that the chocolate which provides me with joy has had a harmless impact.  Many farmers simply don't earn a living wage from cocoa farming and so struggle to provide for their families.  It is especially difficult for women who share in the work yet have fewer rights and often don't get to handle the money they earn . A great book to read if you are interested in the ethics of the Cocoa trade is Kristy Lissele's 'Cocoa'.

We need to value the producers as much as we enjoy the consumption!

This fairtrade fortnight take an extra special look at what you're buying, is it fairtrade or could you buy a fairtrade alternative? Maybe you need some sugar in preparation for pancake day next week, if so why not go out in an effort to buy fairtrade sugar?

We are on a mission for global equality and respect. Buying a fairtrade bar of chocolate is an easy, appealing way to celebrate hard work, skill and craftsmanship of many .
