COP24 Roundup

COP24 (3rd to the 14th of December 2018)

Against a backdrop of Brexit confusion the vitally important COP24 summit occurred in Katowice this month. It has faced serious under coverage despite being on an issue of global significance.

The summit was a mix of frustration and encouragement at the same time. Katowice itself is a coal region and so even before the summit had began there was questions and tension from onlookers. Sir David Attenborough started the summit with a rousing speech on the need for urgent action and there was also many young campaigners and protesters adding their voices, calling for a more environmentally friendly world. The span of people from campaigning youth to the ledgend of Attenborough is an encouraging sign. People of all ages are acting and calling for change. There is a currently a changing attitude and understanding which is exciting.

The summit was particularly significant as it followed the ICCP's recent report on the worrying increase of global warming (we're heading towards a 3°C rise above pre-industrial levels), however this report caused tension and so was not formally welcomed.

Despite continued tension and an pro-coal between the US and Australia the message of needing urgent change was promimant. As inderviduals we need to keep calling for our governments to prioritise the environment and support environmental practises ourselves. For example cutting down on meat, buying local and buying less.

Our actions don't just effect ourselves and the changing climate is especially problematic for already vulnerable people globally. So it is our responsibility to act, speak and change so that our children can have a healthy world to live and thrive in.
