Respecting and Acting

We need to care!

This world and all that is in it is a gift.  A gift which we have been entrusted with, yet have misused, neglected and tarnished.

Earlier this week the IPCC released their latest paper on climate change and it is a definite call to action. A call to do more than just sit and feel sad about the sorry state of the environment. Instead fully and consciously making an effort to change our attitudes and lifestyles so that we can make a real difference our planet's health and future.

Currently we are heading towards global warming of 3°C above above pre-industrial levels. This is neither sustainable nor is it safe, especially for the communities living on low sea level islands as they will suffer the most from the oceans rising.

Moreover, society appears to follow an out of sight of of mind mentality, as long as we're not the ones suffering it doesn't matter and we can keep up our business as usual policies. But for many, potentially for our futures selves, there will not be a choice, adaption will simply be necessary for survival.

The IPCC are pushing for governments to improve on their environmental legislation in order to reduce global warming  from 3°C to 1.5°C in a bid to reduce the rapidly approaching consequences of our negligence. However, as individuals we still need to play our role. If we don't care then governments won't rethink their policies and if we don't call for change then we will only have ourselves to blame further along the line.

Individually we also need to work on reducing the amount of carbon that we create and the waste that we produce. This could be walking instead of using a car , sharing lifts or switching to a sustainable energy supplier. We can all do little things and when those little things are added together there can be big change. But first we need to change our attitudes and make the effort to act.

I am fully confident and hopeful that we can reduce the negative impacts of climate change by turning our care and remorse into actions. It is often said that actions speak louder than words, so I am not just writing but actively trying to improve my little bit of the world by changing my attitude and the way I use the earth's finite resources.
